FOX Sports President Responds To Urban Meyer Coaching Rumors

first_img Unlike many others, FOX Sports president Mark Silverman doesn’t think Urban Meyer is ever returning to the sideline. In a piece about Meyer’s new role with the network, Silverman tells the Chicago Tribune that he thinks Meyer’s retirement will actually stick this time, unlike his departure from Florida, which lasted one season.Last time around, Silverman said he thought Meyer’s mind was still on coaching. In 2011, after he stepped away from Florida, Meyer worked as an analyst for ESPN. He was as stiff as the shaft in Bush’s driver.“I think he was still in the coaching mode, in between jobs,” Silverman said. “Now this is what he is focused on. I’ve noticed a looseness and an enjoyment. He’s coachable. And I think these guys will bring out a side of Urban that people have not seen.”Silverman first worked with Meyer as president of the Big Ten Network, calling him “hyperfocused.”That isn’t the case now, after Meyer joined his fellow Silverman and new colleague Reggie Bush for a round of golf. The FOX Sports executive thinks the former Gators and Buckeyes head coach has come to peace with his coaching career, saying that if you talk to him, “he is done with coaching.”That won’t shut down any of the rumors or speculation. The Tribune notes that even Bush says he’d sign for Meyer to take over USC if the job opens. For now, we are in a Meyer-less college football world, for at least a season.[Chicago Tribune] Urban Meyer after winning the Rose Bowl.PASADENA, CA – JANUARY 01: Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer celebrates winning the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2019 in Pasadena, California. Few seem to think that the 55-year old national title winner is truly done with coaching.USC is the most bandied about program connected to Meyer. The Trojans’ Clay Helton is extremely hot entering 2019.Notre Dame has also come up, though Brian Kelly is in no real trouble. If he was to retire or head to the NFL, Meyer has called Notre Dame his dream job in the past. For now, Meyer is back on TV. He is set to work as an analyst for FOX Sports this upcoming fall.last_img
