The hospital is nearing the end of its construction phase, and is shooting to get an occupancy permit around the middle of March, meaning Northern Health will have access into the building without any personal protective equipment. That means a lot of training is planned for April and May. Service commencement day, when Northern Health is handed the keys to the new facility, is still scheduled for May 31, 2012. Northern Health will be holding another community meeting on February 27 to update the public on the progress of the project and provide new pictures. That meeting will be held at the Quality Inn at 6:30 p.m. Project Director Tom Sparrow says educating staff on the move is important to keep everything flowing. “Based on the fact that it’s a new design, it’s very very important that all of our healthcare folks totally understand what that new design looks like and how they will effectively function within that area. Northern Health is also working to get all of the new equipment logistically placed into the new building, a process Sparrow describes as a “huge operation” that involves receiving the equipment, moving it in, installing it and certifying it and ensuring it it works properly. That’s all in addition to moving the existing equipment in the current hospital, along with the patients and residents. That move requires a “significant” amount of pre-planning, to ensure it is done properly and safely.- Advertisement -“Because of how important it is to safeguard our patients, our residents, our clinical and non-clinical staff, there is a huge amount of co-ordination, facilitation that has to take place not to ensure there is the safety of all concerned when we conduct the move. The actual physical move will take place over four to five days in mid-June.Advertisement

Netball One of the biggest differences between Super Netball and its former versions as Australia’s domestic competition lie in the development of player welfare. Part of these new standards have included the introduction of paid babysitters, as well as maternity and parental leave. Former netballers — especially those that peaked late in their careers or were involved in the national team for a long period of time — were forced to make a decision between starting a family and saying goodbye to their careers. That or waiting until after retirement to start a family for fear of losing their spot on the team and being unable to juggle both when they tried to come back. As a result, there are plenty of players still trying to conceive long after they’ve left the game — and facing the prospect they may never be able to have a child. Others have had success with IVF. But the new support systems that Super Netball has on offer mean the conversations and expectations around players and pregnancy has changed. Individuals are now being encouraged to take on the challenge and blessing of motherhood whenever they are ready — and are often guaranteed a spot in the squad when they decide to return. Which is why we have seen such a boom in player pregnancies in 2020. Last year’s Liz Ellis Diamond winner Gretel Bueta (nee Tippett) recently confirmed she would be sitting out the season as she prepares to become a mum for the first time. Other players like Nat Medhurst, April Brandley, Kim Ravaillion and Kayla Cullen have all opted to take a break and focus on the new additions to their family. But — if we can be so selfish as to focus on netball for a second — it has also left some teams in a pickle. Medhurst, Brandley and Ravaillion all come from the Collingwood Magpies club, who are also missing Ash Brazill after she injured her knee playing AFLW earlier this year. They’ve gone from having one of the most experienced line-ups to missing two current and two former Australian representatives. The Queensland Firebirds haven’t been hit quite as hard, but face a real challenge this year with a tall holding shooter in Romelda Aitken expected to lead the shooting circle with a bunch of young-gun players. There’s no doubt Bueta was the Firebirds’s best player on court last year, and the flair and energy she brings to their shooting circle is enough of a loss. But combine that with the controversial new two-point Super Shot — something she dominated when it was trialled in the bushfire charity match in March — and the Firebirds could be in trouble. The timing of all these players being out for one of the hardest seasons the league has yet faced screams 2020, but what it does allow is for another tactical lesson to be taught to Super Netball teams. How will each club recruit moving forward? Generally, each team will have a strong starting seven and some go-to options with younger players to lean on, if they need to inject something fresh on the court. This line of thinking may shift in the years to come. On the other hand, the rolling subs rule that will be introduced this season allows teams the opportunity to give their entire squad more game time than ever before. Maybe more experience will be just the thing they need when it comes to building multiple starting options and back-up plans.
